Saab has presented Sweden’s first GlobalEye airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, according to the company. The milestone moves the Swedish Armed Forces closer to a long-range surveillance capability spanning air, land and maritime domains.
The aircraft now enters testing and verification ahead of its first flight and delivery to the customer.
Capability
GlobalEye is a multi-domain AEW&C system. It carries an array of active and passive sensors that detect and identify objects in the air, at sea and over land at long range.
The system feeds real-time information to air forces, armies and navies. Saab says this improves understanding of the operational environment and allows earlier detection of threats. The company says the platform gives Sweden the information advantage needed for timely decision-making and effective operations.
“The presentation of Sweden’s first GlobalEye marks an important milestone for both Saab and the Swedish Armed Forces,” said Micael Johansson, Saab’s President and CEO. He added that the aircraft will give Sweden a powerful capability for airborne surveillance and situational awareness as the programme moves towards delivery.
Swedish order
Sweden has ordered three GlobalEye aircraft in total. The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) contracted the first two in 2022 and secured an option for further aircraft. It ordered a third in 2024.
The purchase strengthens Sweden’s national security and defence capability by giving commanders a shared operational picture across all three domains.
