Seven companies and consortiums have been down-selected for the next phase of the competition to supply the British Army’s new Light Mobility Vehicles (LMVs), according to the Ministry of Defence.

The National Armaments Director (NAD) Group runs the programme. It will replace the Army’s ageing Land Rover and Pinzgauer fleets with a modern equipment, training and support package.

Industry Response

The MOD published its Tender Notice in July. A Procurement Specific Questionnaire (PSQ) followed and drew strong interest, with 14 suppliers responding. Seven met the requirements to advance.

The down-selected bidders and their base vehicle platforms are:

  • Babcock International Group (Toyota)
  • General Dynamics Land Systems UK (Ford)
  • Ineos Automotive (Ineos Automotive)
  • Iturri S.A. (Stellantis)
  • Jaguar Land Rover (Jaguar Land Rover)
  • NP Aerospace Limited (General Motors)
  • Rheinmetall Defence UK (Mercedes)

Lt Gen Anna-Lee Reilly, NAD Group Director General Materiel, praised the quality of the field. She said the upcoming evaluation trials “will be the real test”.

Scope and Timeline

The vehicles will initially cover several roles: General Purpose Vehicle, Tactical Mobility Vehicle, Battlefield Ambulance, Enhanced Protection Vehicle and Utility Vehicles.

The MOD will buy an initial tranche of about 3,000 vehicles. The fleet could grow to more than 9,500. The contract covers supply, training and support, and the initial nine-year term can extend by up to 11 years. Deliveries should begin from 2027.

The next stage combines the formal Invitation to Tender with evaluation trials. Each bidder will bring three variants, giving 21 vehicles in total. Running both phases in parallel supports the MOD’s drive to accelerate procurement under the Strategic Defence Review 2025.

Luke Pollard MP, Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, said the competition will give British forces a “superb modern vehicle”. All seven bidders attended a conference on October 19 with the NAD Group’s LMV delivery team and the Army programme team to align on requirements and process.
