Palantir will base its European HQ in Britain as part of a new partnership agreed between the defence tech giant and the U.K. Government.
As per a U.K. Ministry of Defence press statement, the Government signed a new agreement with the firm yesterday (Thursday) which will boost domestic military AI investment and innovation.
Under the terms of the agreement Palantir will make London the base for the company’s European defence business, establishing Britain as a hub for defence technology innovation. Palantir will also mentor and develop British defence start-ups and SMEs as they seek to access U.S. markets.
The firm has pledged to invest up to £1.5bn, creating up to 350 new jobs: 200 in-house at Palantir and about 150 more in the wider defence industry.
The investment will help to develop the Digital Targeting Web, an initiative announced in the Government’s Strategic Defence Review, as part of a wider plan to digitise all sources of information across the MoD to be accessed and used as appropriate.
Defence Secretary John Healey MP commented: “This partnership is a major vote of confidence in U.K. leadership in defence, data and AI technology and as an ideal location for companies to invest and expand.
“By harnessing the power of AI, we will boost the effectiveness of our armed forces, ensuring they have the tools they need to keep the British people safe.”
Palantir CEO Alex Karp said: “This partnership reflects our deep commitment to the U.K. It will see up to £750m invested in the most advanced AI-enabled defence technology, honed on the battlefield in Ukraine and used extensively by the U.S. and NATO.
“It will reinforce the U.K.’s position as a major military force protecting the West from our adversaries. And it will underline the U.K.’s status as our largest presence outside of the U.S.”
