Rheinmetall Expands Strike Network with New Containerized Munition Launcher

Rheinmetall has introduced a new containerized launcher for its FV-014 loitering munition system, expanding its efforts to integrate reconnaissance, command and strike capabilities within a single digital combat network.

The German defence company revealed the Containerized Missile Launcher (CML) as part of its broader reconnaissance and strike architecture. According to Rheinmetall, the system is designed to shorten sensor-to-shooter timelines and improve battlefield responsiveness through a highly networked approach.

The CML houses up to 18 FV-014 loitering munitions within a standard 20-foot container. Rheinmetall designed the launcher as a fully autonomous and modular system that operators can deploy across multiple platforms. Integrated power generation and communications equipment allow the launcher to operate without a permanent crew.

The FV-014 combines surveillance and strike functions in a single platform. Rheinmetall says the munition can fly for up to 70 minutes and engage targets at ranges of up to 100 kilometres. Its compact size also enables swarm operations, allowing several aircraft to launch simultaneously while remaining under the control of a single operator.

A key feature of the system is its integration with Rheinmetall’s Battlesuite digital architecture. The software environment links sensors, platforms and weapons through open interfaces, enabling faster data sharing and reducing integration requirements. The company said the architecture supports military STANAG standards as well as widely used technologies such as ROS2 and MAVLink.

The launcher’s open architecture also allows the integration of additional munition types and compatibility with national command-and-control networks. Rheinmetall said operators can connect the CML to mission-planning tools, autonomous unmanned systems, AI-assisted target recognition and counter-drone capabilities.

The containerized design supports deployment by road, rail and sea, offering greater mobility and concealment. Rheinmetall said the system can operate from fixed positions or be mounted on vehicles, railcars and ships. A battery system and low-power standby mode enable extended autonomous operation, while an optional generator can further increase endurance.

With the combination of the CML, FV-014 and Battlesuite, Rheinmetall is positioning the system as an integrated reconnaissance-strike network rather than a standalone weapon. According to the company, the architecture brings intelligence gathering, command functions and precision strike assets into a single operational framework, reflecting the growing emphasis on connected and autonomous battlefield capabilities.
