Saab has contracted with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) to deliver 16 Gripen E fighter aircraft to Ukraine. The deal carries an approximate value of SEK 24.6 billion, as per a recent press statement. Saab will book the order in the third quarter of 2026 and plans deliveries to FMV between 2029 and 2030. The contract also covers spare parts and associated equipment.
President and CEO of Saab, Micael Johansson, commented: “I am deeply proud that Sweden and Saab can now enable the provision of Gripen E to Ukraine, bringing a world-class fighter that will transform the Ukrainian Air Force’s capability. This will significantly strengthen Ukraine’s air defence and help ensure the nation can protect its people and safeguard its future.”
Saab built the Gripen E for high-threat environments, offering considerable operational flexibility. The aircraft can launch from short runways, temporary airstrips, or roads, enabling dispersed basing and sustained sortie rates. A software-based architecture supports continuous upgrades as operational requirements evolve, while low maintenance demands and fast turnaround times keep availability high and reduce through-life costs.
Ukraine’s air force has faced sustained pressure since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Sixteen Gripen E jets would deliver a substantial capability uplift, complementing existing Western air defence commitments and strengthening Kyiv’s capacity to contest and defend its airspace.
